Basic Astronomy Teacher's Workshop
Stars Northwest will come to your school and put on a one day
basic astronomy workshop, this would be ideal for a teacher
in-service day. If you wish, I can make this workshop into a
two day or even 3 day event; these days may be spread out over
the school year.
Topics
This will include such terms as ecliptic, astronomical unit,
light-year, star types (dwarf, giant, binary), galaxy, clusters,
and spectra plus many more.
A discussion of the planets: hard rock versus gas giants,
types of orbits and revolutions of the planets, differences in
the planets and their moons, DISTANCES of the various planets
from the sun, and composition of planets and moons.
If teachers have a basic understanding of the Milky Way, they
will have a basic understanding of most galaxies astronomers
have been able to observe. The discussion will include the
estimated age of the universe, movements of stars in the galaxy,
and galaxies in the universe.
Teachers will be able to identify the most common constellations
and bright stars in the night sky such as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor,
Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Draco the Dragon, Hercules, The Summer
Triangle, Orion, Sirius (the Dog Star), Arcturus, and Vega to name
a few.
The workshop will be taught using multimedia techniques
including a digital projector, computer programs,
Powerpoint, printed handouts, and, of course, the Starlab.
